Window Film

The problem
We love the sunlight, its colours, its warmth. We take pride in the things we have worked hard for: our homes and the objects in them. But the sun can damage furniture, carpets, works of art, paintwork, and wall coverings.

The solution
Whilst fading or damage can almost always be significantly reduced, it can never be stopped completely – ageing and colour changes of materials are facts of life. However, one particularly effective method of reducing fading / damage is to use modern, high performance, high durability window film. These micro-thin, high technology products provide a wide range of options with a variety of properties to meet your particular needs.

Causes of Fading
Solar energy consists of 3 % Ultra Violet (UV) light, 44 % Visible Light and 53 % Infra Red (IR) energy. As a guideline, the different parts of solar energy contribute to fade as shown here.

Although UV is only 3 % of solar energy reaching the earth, at 40 % it is the biggest cause of fade and damage; therefore it is most important to reduce UV to low levels. But to obtain the best fade reduction possible, both visible light and Infra Red should also be reduced.

Fade reduction with
window film

Many home owners desire solar/fade protection while maintaining natural light. As a result, window film manufacturers can offer products that appear completely clear with > 99 % UV rejection. Alternatively, products are available with an almost imperceptible tint that reject > 99 % UV and have much lower infra-red (heat-near IR) transmission.

Any window film for fade reduction should therefore have performance of: Less than 1 % UV transmission, preferably less than 0,1 % UV transmission
As low visible light transmission as is acceptable for your home.

Less than 90 % direct solar transmission, preferably less than 75 % direct solar transmission (lower than 75 % is better still).

Finally, it is important to ensure that the selected window film will continue to offer protection from fading and damage over a number of years. Ensure that the selected window film will filter UV to less than 1 % (preferably less than 0,1 %) for many years; normally this means that UV absorbers will be deep dyed into at least one layer of polyester film within the window film structure. All good quality window film manufacturers offer suitable products.
